Few things are more frustrating than buying new sheets, making the bed, and realizing they don't fit right. The fitted sheet pops off the corners. The flat sheet is too short to tuck. The pillowcases are either baggy or too snug.
This guide fixes that. Below, you'll find the complete U.S. bed sheet size chart with exact dimensions, answers to the most common size questions we hear, and everything you need to buy the right sheets the first time.
We've pulled our own product dimensions from our full line of sheets- so the numbers you see here are actual, real-world CDD measurements, not generic estimates.

Most mattresses fall right at these standard dimensions. The key exception is mattress depth- standard mattresses typically run 8"–12", while pillow-top and thicker mattresses can reach 14"–18". If your mattress is on the thicker side, deep-pocket fitted sheets (like all of ours at 15–16") are what you need.
Will Queen Sheets Fit a Full Bed?
This is one of our most common size questions, and the answer is: technically yes, but it's not ideal.
A full/double mattress measures 54" × 75". A queen mattress measures 60" × 80". That's 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer.
If you put a queen-size flat sheet on a full bed, you'll have extra fabric- it'll hang more than needed on the sides and feel slightly oversized. Some people prefer this for a relaxed, billowy look, but it won't stay as tucked or as neat as a properly sized flat sheet.
The bigger issue is the fitted sheet. A queen fitted sheet is sized for a 60-inch-wide mattress. On a 54-inch full mattress, a queen fitted sheet will fit- it'll just have some looseness and may shift around more than you'd like, especially if the elastic isn't a full-perimeter band.
Our recommendation: Use full-size sheets on a full/double mattress. They're made for the right dimensions and will give you the best fit and feel. The price difference between full and queen is minimal, and the right fit makes a real difference in how your bed looks and how the sheets hold up over time.
Is Full the Same as Double?
Yes- full and double are the same size. Both describe a mattress that is 54" × 75". The two names are completely interchangeable, and you'll see both used by different brands and retailers.
"Double" was the term used for decades- it meant roughly double the width of a twin (though the actual dimensions aren't exactly double). "Full" became the more common term over time. Today most manufacturers use both or either.
When you're shopping for sheets labeled "Full/Double," you can use them on either type of mattress without any issue.
Do King Sheets Fit a California King?
No- standard king sheets and California king sheets are not interchangeable. They have different dimensions and will not fit properly on the wrong mattress.
Here's the key difference:
|
Size |
Mattress Width |
Mattress Length |
|
King |
76" wide |
80" long |
|
California King |
72" wide |
84" long |
A California king mattress is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a standard king. A king fitted sheet won't properly wrap a Cal king mattress- it'll be too wide and too short.
For California king mattresses, you must buy California king sheets. The dimensions are purpose-built for this mattress size.
At California Design Den, we make dedicated California king sheets in all our lines- 400, 500, 600, 800, and 1000 TC sateen, plus Egyptian Cotton. Our Cal King fitted sheets measure 72" × 84" with a 16-inch deep pocket, matching the dimensions of Cal king mattresses precisely.
Full vs Full XL: What's the Difference?
Full XL is a less common size- it's the same width as a standard full (54") but 5 inches longer (80" instead of 75"), matching the length of a twin XL or queen.
Full XL mattresses are sometimes found in adjustable bed frames, certain platform beds, or specialty mattresses. If your full-size mattress is standard depth (75" long), you don't need to worry about this distinction.
If you have a full XL mattress- 54" × 80"- the closest standard sheet size is a queen fitted sheet (60" × 80"). It will fit the length perfectly, though it'll be slightly loose at the width. You can also look for brands that specifically make full XL sheets, though availability is more limited.
Quick check: If your full mattress is exactly 75" long, buy full sheets. If it's 80" long, look for full XL or queen sheets.
Split King Sheets: A Special Case

A split king is two twin XL mattresses placed side by side in a king-size frame- commonly used with adjustable bases where each partner controls their own side.
The total width of a split king equals a standard king (2 × 38" = 76"). But because the mattress is in two pieces, you need two twin XL fitted sheets (one per side), not a single king fitted sheet.
For the flat sheet and pillowcases, you can use standard king-size items. The flat sheet works fine across the full width.
California Design Den Split King sets include:
- 1 King flat sheet (112" × 102")
- 2 Twin XL fitted sheets (39" × 80", 15" deep pocket)
- 2 King pillowcases
This setup is exactly what adjustable bed owners need.
Deep Pocket Sheets: When Do You Need Them?
Deep pocket fitted sheets are designed for thicker mattresses- specifically those over 12 inches in depth. If you have a pillow-top mattress, a mattress with a topper, or any mattress over 12 inches thick, deep pocket sheets are essential.
Standard mattress depths typically run 8"–12". Pillow-top and luxury mattresses often run 13"–18".
A fitted sheet's pocket depth is the measurement from the edge of the mattress to the elastic band underneath. Standard sheets usually have a pocket depth of 12"–13". Deep pocket sheets typically measure 15"–18", which is enough to wrap a thick mattress fully.
California Design Den deep pocket specs:
- 400–600 TC (Twin, Twin XL): 15" deep pocket
- 400–800 TC (Full, Queen, King, Cal King): 16" deep pocket
- 800 TC and above: 18” anti-skid gripper elastic band around the full perimeter
Our full-perimeter elastic band is designed to stay put all night- no corners popping off, no sheet sliding during the night. For people who've dealt with standard corner-elastic sheets that constantly pop free, this is a meaningful difference.
Hospital Bed Sheet Sizes
Hospital beds use non-standard mattress dimensions. A standard hospital mattress is typically 36" × 80"- narrower than a twin (38") and the same length as a twin XL.
Standard twin sheets are too wide, and standard twin XL sheets are slightly too wide as well. Many hospital supply companies sell specialty hospital bed sheets sized for 36" × 80" mattresses.
If you're looking for sheets for a home hospital bed, here's what to do: measure your mattress first. A twin XL fitted sheet (39" × 80") is often used as a workable substitute since the extra 3 inches of width can still tuck under adequately. Always confirm your mattress depth to ensure the pocket will fit.
How to Measure Your Mattress for Sheets
If you're unsure of your mattress size- or if it's a non-standard size- take three measurements before buying sheets:
1. Width: Measure across the top of the mattress from one side to the other. 2. Length: Measure from the head of the mattress to the foot. 3. Depth: Measure from the top of the mattress down to the floor-facing side.
Add 2 inches to your depth measurement when choosing sheets. If your mattress is 13" deep, look for sheets with at least 15" of pocket depth. This gives you enough fabric to wrap fully and tuck securely.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size sheets do I need for a queen bed?
A queen mattress is 60" × 80". You need queen-size sheets- a fitted sheet sized 60" × 80" with a 15–16" deep pocket, a flat sheet around 90" × 102", and standard/queen pillowcases.
Will queen sheets fit a full bed?
Yes, but loosely. A queen flat sheet will be too wide and long for a full mattress, resulting in excess fabric. A queen fitted sheet will also be loose on a full mattress. For the best fit, use full/double sheets on a full bed.
What's the difference between king and California king sheets?
King sheets (76" × 80" mattress) and California king sheets (72" × 84" mattress) are not interchangeable. Cal king mattresses are 4" narrower and 4" longer than standard king. Always buy Cal king sheets for Cal king mattresses.
Is full the same as double?
Yes. Full and double are the same mattress size: 54" × 75". The terms are used interchangeably by different manufacturers.
What does "deep pocket" mean on sheets?
Deep pocket refers to the depth of the fitted sheet's elastic-edged pocket- how much fabric is available to wrap under the mattress. Standard is around 12". The deep pocket is 15"–18", designed for thicker or pillow-top mattresses.
What size sheets fit a split king?
For a split king adjustable bed, you need two twin XL fitted sheets (one per side) plus a king flat sheet and king pillowcases.
