How It Started
California Design Den has always been a family business whose core values were—and continue to be—grounded in quality, trust, and affordability. In 2006, Deepak and Rohit Mehrotra began manufacturing textiles in family-owned and operated facilities, becoming trusted manufacturing partners for leading brands and retailers across the U.S. and Canada.
In 2017, the brothers formed California Design Den as a direct-to-consumer brand with a simple mission: create affordable, natural, high-quality linens that help people sleep better.
Putting Down Roots
Our California-based design team handles everything from performance to packaging, and we use real customer feedback and reviews to improve continuously. We focus on the details that matter most—how fabric feels, how it performs after washing, how it fits, and how it lasts.
By utilizing family-owned manufacturing facilities and working with cotton grown on small, family-operated farms, we’re able to oversee operations directly and pass savings on to our customers. Quality and consistency are built into our process at every step—both at home and abroad.
We choose natural, plant-based fabrics and design products to be made-to-last—because durability is one of the most practical ways to reduce waste.
Cultivating Quality
Natural fibers can make a meaningful difference in how you sleep and how you feel. We use only plant-based cotton fabrics—no synthetic microfiber, which sheds microplastics with every wash—and manufacture in family-run facilities that we own, operate, and manage, ensuring consistent standards, finishing, and quality control.
A Note on Thread Count (Honest and Useful)
Thread count matters—but not as a “bigger is always better” number. We use thread count the way it’s meant to be used: as a practical way to describe fabric weight, feel, and use-case.
In simple terms:
- Lower thread counts tend to feel lighter and crisper, with an airy, breathable feel.
- Mid-range thread counts often give the best balance of softness, durability, and breathability.
- Higher thread counts generally feel smoother, denser, and more substantial, with more drape and weight.
That’s why we offer multiple thread counts—so you can choose what feels best for your sleep style, your climate, and your preferences. We back that up with consistent weaving, careful finishing, and quality checks—not marketing hype.
Authenticity & Certifications
Different fabrics have different certifications—and we keep that transparent:
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: our bedding is tested for harmful substances for everyday peace of mind.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): applies to our organic cotton collections.
Egyptian Cotton™ Gold Seal: applies to our Egyptian cotton collections to verify authenticity.
Trusted by millions
We're proud to have served over eight million sleepers and to have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal — independently evaluated by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Our sheets have also been recognized by the Good Housekeeping Bedding Award and featured by Oprah Daily. In 2026, California Design Den became a proud partner of the 5th Annual Hearst Eco-Conscious Living Summit. Our greatest reward, though, remains a good night's sleep for the people who trust us.
Giving Back
We donate bedding annually through Delivering Good. Over the last few years, we’ve contributed 55,000+ bedding articles to support people and families in need—because rest and comfort should be accessible to everyone.
Our Sheeting Process
Affordable doesn’t mean cheap. By owning our production facilities and offering online-only retail, we cut ties with the traditional supply chain and removed all of the middlemen that come with it (sourcing agents, distributors, wholesalers, brick-and-mortar sales reps). We utilize a cost-effective third-party warehouse based in the U.S. for shipping support, and keep our marketing costs intentionally low, so that we can pass on the savings directly to our customers.
Our product team creates all the designs at our headquarters in California. Customer feedback is regularly analyzed and crucial to the design process. All products, including our sheets, are designed to last and withstand years of wear and washing.
All sheeting is packaged in boxes made from recycled paper, without plastic. The only time we use plastic is to vacuum seal our bulkier inserts, to reduce weight and our overall carbon footprint while shipping.
All cotton (excluding Egyptian) is sourced from small, family-owned farms in South India. We purchase raw fibers of the highest quality and rigorously test them throughout each phase of product development.
Our organic cotton products are GOTS certified. Our base cotton is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified. Our thread counts and country of origin can easily be authenticated.
Each step of production happens in our family-owned and operated facility, located in Thane, Maharashtra, India. Owning this step in the process allows us to reduce costs and cut out third-party middlemen from our supply chain strategy. This location alone supports over 500 families and follows strict workplace guidelines and safety protocols that reduce fatigue and injury.
