Yes—but not as a ranking. Thread count describes the weight, texture, and density of a weave. A 400TC sheet isn’t worse than a 1000TC sheet; it’s lighter and airier, while a 1000TC sheet is denser and heavier with more drape. The right thread count is the one that matches how you sleep, not the highest number on the label.

What is thread count, exactly?
Thread count is the number of threads woven horizontally and vertically within one square inch of fabric. It's a measure of weave density—a useful indicator of a sheet's weight and hand-feel, not a single quality score.
Thread count applies to woven cotton fabrics. It isn't a meaningful measurement for synthetic microfiber, which uses a different fiber structure entirely—one more reason California Design Den sheets are made from 100% natural cotton, with no synthetic microfiber.
Two sheets with the same thread count can still feel different depending on the cotton quality, staple length, and weave type (Percale vs. Sateen). That's why material and construction matter alongside the number, not instead of it.

Do you like sheets that feel light and crisp, or heavier with more drape? Start there—the thread count follows from the feel you want, not the other way around.
Check the material, not just the count
Thread count and material work together. 100% natural cotton at any thread count is a different product from synthetic microfiber sold under an inflated number.
Match the weave to your preference
Percale feels crisp and matte. Sateen feels smoother and slightly more lustrous. The same thread count feels noticeably different in each.
