Understanding the Basics

What Is a Split King?

A split king bed is made of two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side on one king-size bed frame. Together, they form the same footprint as a standard king (76" × 80") — but each side operates independently.

This setup is most common with adjustable bed bases, where each partner can raise or lower their side without disturbing the other. It's the go-to configuration for couples with different sleep positions, reading habits, or snoring situations.

How Split King Sheets Work

Because a split king uses two separate mattresses, you need two Twin XL fitted sheets — one for each mattress. The flat sheet and pillowcases remain king-size, just like a standard king bed.

When shopping, look for sets specifically labeled “Split King” that include the correct combination: 2 fitted sheets (Twin XL), 1 flat sheet (King), and 2 pillowcases.

Get the Right Fit

Split King Sheet Sizing

The most common mistake is buying standard king fitted sheets for a split king bed. They won't work — each mattress needs its own fitted sheet.

Piece Size Fits
Fitted Sheet (×2) 39" × 80" Twin XL mattress, each side
Flat Sheet (×1) 112" × 102" Entire king bed — drapes over both mattresses
Pillowcase (×2) 20" × 40" (King) Standard king pillows

Deep Pocket Fit

Most adjustable bed mattresses are 10"–14" deep. CDD's fitted sheets accommodate mattresses from 8" to 16" with 360° elastic and a secure tuck — so they stay put even when the bed is in a raised position. This matters more with split kings than standard beds because the mattress moves.

Why It Matters

Who Needs Split King Sheets?

Adjustable Bed Owners

Each side moves independently. Standard king sheets pull and pop off — split king fitted sheets stay secure on each mattress, even at an incline.

Couples With Different Preferences

One partner runs warm, the other sleeps cold. With split king, you can put a 400TC breathable sheet on one side and an 800TC cocoon sheet on the other. Same bed, different feel.

Anyone Who Wants Better Sleep

Reading in bed while your partner sleeps. Elevating your head for reflux or snoring. The split king configuration gives each person control without compromise.

Easy Laundry, Easier Bed-Making

Twin XL fitted sheets are smaller and lighter than king sheets — easier to wash, dry, and fold. And you only need to remake one side at a time.

Choose Your Material

What to Look for in Split King Sheets

The sheet material matters more than anything else. It determines how the sheets feel, how long they last, and whether they stay on the mattress when it moves.

Why 100% Cotton

Natural cotton breathes. It gets softer with every wash. It doesn't trap body heat or shed microplastics into your bed. For a split king setup — where mattresses move and adjust — cotton's natural give is an advantage. It stretches and recovers without losing its shape.

Synthetic microfiber sheets are cheaper, but they shed plastic microfibers every time you wash them. When your sheets are on an adjustable base that moves nightly, the friction accelerates that shedding. Cotton doesn't have this problem.

Thread Count as a Selection Tool

Thread count describes the weight and feel of the fabric. It's not a ranking — it's a preference. Here's how to think about it:

400
Everyday Ease

Soft, smooth, and airy. Balanced weight. Great for anyone who doesn't want sheets that feel heavy.

600
Restful Retreat

Soft, smooth, slightly more substance. Crisp and polished. A year-round staple.

800
Hotel Luxe

Substantial, smooth, and dense. An heirloom feel with a gentle sheen. For those who love weight and drape.

1000
Ultimate Indulgence

Soft, smooth, and rich. Luminous sheen with a silky glide. Sumptuous, thick, and heavy — the full cocoon experience.

Common Questions

Split King Sheets FAQ

What's the difference between a split king and a regular king?

A regular king uses one mattress (76" × 80"). A split king uses two Twin XL mattresses (each 39" × 80") placed side by side. The total bed size is the same, but each mattress moves independently — which is why split kings are paired with adjustable bases.

Can I use regular king sheets on a split king bed?

You can use a king flat sheet — that drapes over both mattresses. But you cannot use a king fitted sheet. It won't conform to two separate mattresses. You need two Twin XL fitted sheets instead.

Will the flat sheet stay on when one side is raised?

The flat sheet may shift slightly when one side is elevated, which is normal. Many split king sleepers tuck the flat sheet at the foot of the bed. Some prefer to skip the flat sheet entirely and use individual duvet covers — it's a personal preference.

Will the fitted sheets stay on an adjustable base?

CDD's fitted sheets use 360° elastic with deep pockets (fits mattresses 8"–16"). The elastic maintains tension even when the mattress is raised, so the sheet stays secure. The key is full-perimeter elastic — avoid sheets with elastic only at the corners

What thread count should I choose for a split king?

Thread count describes weight and feel, not quality level. 400TC is light and airy — great for sleepers who don't want a heavy sheet. 600TC is the balanced middle ground. 800TC and above offer more weight and drape — a denser, cocooning feel. One of the benefits of split king: you can put a different thread count on each side to match each partner's preference.

Are split king sheets more expensive than regular king?

Split king sets typically cost slightly more because they include an extra fitted sheet. At CDD, the difference is modest because we manufacture our own sheets — no middleman markup. The price reflects materials and labor, not retail margin.

Do you sell fitted sheets separately, not as part of a set?

Yes — CDD sells fitted sheets individually in addition to full sheet sets. This is useful for replacements, mixing thread counts, or buying for a split king bed.
